On the nearside of our window
We heard and saw but never faced the storm
So far from the way we felt together
Remember how winter kept us warm

And the glass combs on the fences
The powder on the gate that heaped and spilled
Slipped like ash, or splintered like an ember
Remember how winter never chilled

And kept us warm so much better than the spring
The bitter spring

The snowflakes would parade their perfect form
